New VW Polo GTI for Paris 2014 unveil

  • Volkswagen had recently refreshed its Polo GT offerings in India and now has revealed an updated version GTI version for the UK, a few days ahead of the upcoming Paris motor show. This hot hatch sees some interesting updates such as a bigger engine and new gearbox options.

  • The engine on the GTI has grown up from a 1.4-litre four-cylinder direct injection petrol engine to a more powerful turbocharged 1.8-litre four cylinder direct injection engine from the EA888 engine line from Audi. This has raised the power output from 178bhp to 189bhp. The impressive increase of 11bhp is accompanied by a raise of 75.9 Nm of torque over the old 249Nm.
  • The Polo now hits 0-100kph in a faster 6.7sec and is 8kph faster in top speed, going up to 237kph. We cannot say at this point in time whether these figures can also be attributed to any change in the weight of the Polo GTI as Volkswagen has not parted with these details.
  • In addition to the new engine, the Polo GTI also offers the standard six-speed manual gearbox, while the seven-speed dual shift gearbox that the previous model was sold exclusively with, is now available as an option. The suspension also gets a ‘Sports-Select’ option featuring adaptive damping control.
  • The interiors see some upgrades as well such as a sports steering wheel, unique instrument graphics and contoured seats similar in style to those seen on the Golf GTI. The range topping Polo GTI gets uniquely styled bumpers, red GTI badges and a subtle tailgate spoiler as standard to differentiate it from the other Polo models.
  • The sad part is however, that the India will not see the GTI coming to its shores and it will have to be content with the Polo GT TSI and GT TDI.
