Small and mighty: the history of the Japanese kei car, Part - 2

  • As a result, kei cars could be 200mm longer and 100mm wider, although with the government announcing the change in August 1975, carmakers had little time to react.
  • As carmakers developed new and better kei cars, sales increased. Kei cars were also a viable export proposition, with many heading for Europe.

  • The modern kei car was born in 1990. By allowing an extra 110cc and a 100mm longer bodyshell, the kei car had come of age. Many 660cc heroes were born.
  • The Japanese government introduced a 64hp limit, although the fitment of superchargers and turbochargers meant that carmakers could achieve startling performance figures and remarkable fuel economy.
  • Many people were introduced to the wild and wonderful kei cars via the Gran Turismo PlayStation game, first introduced in at the end of 1997.

  • Crucially, the kei car regulations only restrict physical size and engine displacement, leaving carmakers to play with rear-wheel drive, four-wheel drive, turbochargers, superchargers, automatic transmissions and CVTs.
  • In 2011, Subaru - one of the sector’s pioneers - ceased building kei cars, bringing to an end 54 years of production. But Subaru didn’t leave the sector altogether, as the current Stella is built by Daihatsu.
  • In 2013, The Japan Times reported that kei cars accounted for 30% of sales in Japan, with the US claiming they provide an unfair barrier to trade. In effect, a third of the customer base is unavailable to foreign carmakers. By the end of 2014, kei cars accounted for a staggering 40% of sales in Japan, with a record 2.3 million tiny cars finding new homes. Concerned that carmakers are focusing too much on the domestic market, the Japanese government has introduced a higher tax on kei cars.
  • According to the Best Selling Cars Blog, the Honda N-Box is the most popular kei car in Japan, topping the charts for the 10th consecutive month. Total sales in October 2015: 12,277.

  • In second place is the Daihatsu Tanto, a rather cool kei car introduced in 2003. On one side you’ll find a standard rear door, while the other side features a sliding door. Neat. This photo was taken at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show.

  • In third place, fresh from its recent facelift, is the Nissan Dayz. The revamp has had an immediate effect, with sales up 13%. Happy Dayz for Nissan. This is the Teatro for Dayz concept, shown at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show.

  • In its first full month on sale, the Daihatsu Cast found 8,895 new homes. The funky looking Daihatsu brings to mind the Fiat 500L. Only smaller. And prettier. And more appealing.
  • Love this thing! The Suzuki Hustler was the fifth best-selling kei car in October. It’s little wonder kei cars are so popular. Look at it.

  • If the previous five cars offer a glimpse into kei cars of the present, the Honda S660 is a tantalising glimpse into kei cars of the future. The successor to the Beat might come to the UK.

  • In Japanese spec, the mid-engined, rear-wheel drive S660 features a 660cc engine, but there are rumours it might be sold in the UK with a 1.0-litre turbocharged engine. Honda, please make this happen.

  • But not all Japanese small cars are kei cars. The Toyota iQ is a good case in point. It’s beautifully packaged, but too wide to be classed as a kei car. The 1.0-litre engine is also too big.

Bugatti Chiron to make debut at 2016 Geneva motor show

  • The Bugatti Chiron will make its global debut at the Geneva motor show in March 2016 as the replacement to the Bugatti Veyron, the manufacturer has confirmed.
  • More than 100 orders have been placed for the supercar which takes its name from Louis Chiron, a Bugatti Grand Prix racer in the 1920s and 1930s who won the 1931 French Grand Prix with the manufacturer.
  •  The Chiron was previewed by Bugatti’s Vision GranTurismo concept showcased at the Frankfurt motor show, and the new hypercar prototype was spotted testing in California recently in minimal camouflage. The Chiron is currently undergoing initial conceptual engineering tests in a programme that will see the car make its debut in 2016 prior to planned customer deliveries the following year.
  • A few probable customers were shown the car as part of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. The Chiron is believed to wear a more striking and sportier look, and feature new active aerodynamic functions that aim to provide varying levels of downforce depending on the driving mode chosen.
  • The Veyron replacement is set to adopt a heavily updated version of its predecessor’s turbocharged 8.0-litre W16 engine which will channel power to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox and multi-plate-clutch four-wheel-drive system. However, the big news centres around plans to provide the new Bugatti with hybrid drive by way of a disc-shaped electric motor mounted within the gearbox housing and a lithium-ion battery.
  • The fuel efficiency will also be improved with new direct-injection combustion process replacing the multi-point injection system.  The Chiron is believed to produce power in the region of 1479bhp, according to officials. There are also rumours about Volkswagen engineers looking at electric turbochargers for the Chiron which will further improve the already colossal torque.
  • Major efforts are also being made to ensure that the weight of the new car remains well below that of the 1,840kg Veyron Super Sport. The Chiron aims to beat the Veyron Super Sport’s blistering 0-100 time of 2.5secs to 2.3secs and achieve a top speed of 460kph. However, proving the top speed could be tricky due to the challenges in finding a test site long enough, and for tyre technology to support such a high-speed run.
  • As with the Veyron, production of the Chiron will be limited to about 450 units and it will challenge the Pagani Huayra and Koenigsegg One:1.

Audi to develop new petrol-electric hybrid powertrain

  • Audi has revealed that it is planning a new petrol-electric hybrid powertrain for 2017. Company bosses have told our sister publication, Autocar UK that Audi is betting on the electrification of its future cars to improve real-world economy and reduce exhaust pollution.
  • The key to Audi’s move is the adoption of Integrated Starter Generators (ISG) which are large electric motors that act as the starter motor and alternator, but it can also assist the engine by sending torque through the drive belt to the engine’s crankshaft. The system is also fitted with a small lithium-ion battery.
  • The carmaker has also developed an ISG that works on an ordinary 12V electrical system, so it could be fitted to the current A1 and A3 models. According to Audi, the system allows the stop-start system to cut in below 14.48kph and also allows the engine to coast at high speeds, both significant fuel-saving measures. The first production version is expected in 2017.
  • The company is also planning to introduce a more powerful 48V ISG system, the first of which will be revealed before the end of the year, using a combined 12V and 48V set-up. The 48V system allows for a more powerful ISG (up from 1.5bhp to 16bhp) and engine coasting of up to 30 seconds. However, the introduction of full-scale 48V electronics will also allow Audi to introduce electrically driven engine compressors, which will come in two forms. This 48V electrical system has also allowed Audi to develop three new suspension concepts.
  • Audi’s drive towards hybrids and electrification is part of a big move towards autonomous powertrain management.
  • This shift towards ‘mild hybrid’ systems and more conventional plug-in hybrids should result in Audi’s future line-up moving away from diesel engines, especially across the company’s smaller models, including the A1, A3 and A4. This move will also allow Audi to exploit its new ‘predictive efficiency assistant’ technology which will be launched on the Q7 e-tron. The system uses mapping information and live traffic reports to automatically switch between power sources, as well as taking advantage of downhill roads to ‘coast’ the engine.
  • Moving to petrol hybrid engines will also allow the company to usher in some highly advanced suspension innovations, as well as provide a degree of autonomy that goes beyond simple driving assistance.

Small and mighty: the history of the Japanese kei car, Part - 1

  • The tiny Japanese kei car can trace its roots back as far as post-war Japan. Since then, the fun-size motors have conquered their domestic market and spread across the world. We celebrate the history of the kei car.
  • The name stems from kei jidosha - or light vehicle - and it covers kei cars, kei trucks and kei minivans. Indeed, the earliest kei vehicles were delivery trucks, designed for small businesses and shops. This lineup of model cars shows the diversity.
  •  The growth of the kei car was thanks to Japan’s Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), as it looked to kickstart the economy after the Second World War.

  • Many Japanese people were unable to afford a full-size car, so it was hoped that these kei cars would mobilise the nation by giving people an alternative to motorcycles.
  • Kei cars were cheaper to buy, to insure and to tax. Initial growth was slow, not least because the engines were restricted to 150cc four-stroke or 100cc two-stroke capacities.
  • In the early 1950s, the engine restrictions were slowly lifted. In 1950, 300cc four-stroke and 200cc two-stroke were permitted, with 1951 seeing the limit raised to 360cc and 240cc respectively. But the increase to 360cc for both four- and two-stroke engines heralded the real birth of the kei car. The Suzuki Suzulight goes down in history as the first kei car.

  • When it went on sale in October 1955, three body styles were available, namely the Suzulight SS (saloon), Suzulight SL (light van) and Suzulight SP (pickup). The Suzulight brand lived on until 1969.
  • But if the Suzulight laid the foundations, it was the Subaru 360 of 1958 that provided the building blocks for the kei. This was the first mass-produced kei car.
  • The Subaru 360 - nicknamed the Ladybug - was a landmark vehicle. It was the first car to be sold under Fuji Heavy Industries’ Subaru brand and is one of the best selling microcars of all-time. A total of 300,000 cars were sold.

  • Malcolm Bricklin established Subaru of America in 1968, simply to sell the 360 in the USA. Bricklin is the businessman responsible for the Bricklin SV-1 sports car, as well as importing Yugos from Yugoslavia.
  • The Subaru kei car took its name from its two-stroke 356cc engine. With 16hp on tap, it wasn’t exactly quick, but it offered accommodation for four adults. In its day, the 360 was a credible rival to the Volkswagen Beetle.
  • As kei cars developed, they grew ever more sophisticated. The Honda N360 of 1967 was a sign that the industry was finding its feet. Like the Subaru 360, this was a significant car.

  • It was powered by a 354cc taken from the Honda CB450 motorcycle, with the displacement reduced to comply with kei car legislation. In many ways, the Honda N360 was the Japanese Mini.
  • Indeed, the larger-engined N600 was developed for export market and was the first Japanese car to be officially exported to the United States.
  • The Honda N600 wasn’t hugely successful on the global stage, but it did pave the way a certain Honda Civic, which arrived in 1973. In the 1970s, the kei car industry was coming under increasing pressure, with the Japanese government abolishing some of the benefits associated with kei car ownership.
  • At the same time, the car industry as a whole was facing tougher control on emissions, which had a big effect on kei cars. The sector declined, with Honda and Mazda ceasing kei car production, while continuing to build kei trucks.
  • From the start of 1976, the kei car began to fight back. The Japanese government introduced a new 550cc limit, while agreeing that cars could be longer and wider.

New 2016 Mercedes-Benz SL revealed at LA Auto Show

  • Mercedes-Benz has given its iconic SL roadster a big refresh for the 2016 model year. Debuting at the LA Motor Show this week, the new range has been enhanced outside, within and underneath to make it crisper, posher and more dynamic.
  •  The 2016 SL has a sharper Mercedes AMG GT-style front end, with a standout diamond radiator grille, enhanced LED lighting and enlarged air intakes.
  • The folding hard-top vario roof of the 2016 Mercedes-Benz SL has been reengineered: it can now be operated on the move at speeds of up to 25mph.

  • Mercedes-Benz may have made the headlights slimmer, but it’s made the side air outlets bigger. Pity they’re still purely cosmetic. As we’ll see, Mercedes-Benz has also revised the sporty AMG 63 and AMG 65 models” the sit at the top of a four-engine range also comprising 367hp SL 400 and 455hp SL 500 – now with nine-speed automatic gearbox as standard. All versions, it says, are sharper and more agile to drive.
  • Inside, Mercedes-Benz has sweated on the details. It offers three-colour ambient lighting (red, white or blue), revised dials and, in a neat tough, a central TFT display screen that flashes up a front view of the new SL on start-up.

  •  Check out the powerdomes on the bonnet: they’re new for 2016 and feature on all revised Mercedes-Benz SL models. They’re there to evoke the sporting heritage of the SL, says Mercedes. Rear lights of the revised SL are now all-red, with wedge-shape indicator at the top and both tail and brake lamps below.
  • Mercedes-Benz reckons the new 2016 SL is smoother and more appealing both roof down And roof up. It also offers two new colours – this brilliant blue (a colour that’s becoming a Mercedes-Benz feature hue) and design selenite grey magno. There’s a broad range of new alloy wheel designs as well.
  • A new feature for 2016 is optional Active Body Control with curve tilting function. This ‘leans’ the SL into corners, reducing the cornering effects on occupants. It means the driver can take bends much faster without the passenger noticing!
  • The two supercars of the SL range, the SL 63 and SL 65, have also been revised for 2016 – now wearing Mercedes-AMG branding. The Mercedes-AMG SL63 AMG is the more focused of the two.

  • Packing an enhanced 585hp 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8, the SL 63 can do 0-62mph in 4.1 seconds and is limited to either 155mph or, if you choose the AMG Driver’s package, 186mph.
  • Interior treats include a flat-bottom steering wheel, IWC analogue clock and standard nappa leather.

  •  As well as fitting a rear-axle differential lock as standard, Mercedes-AMG has also enhanced the AMG Speedshift MCT 7-speed automatic – even the aluminium shift paddles behind the steering wheel work more quickly.
  • As with the regular 2016 SL, the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 has a totally new front end with AMG-specific twin-bar radiator grille, air intake-packed front bumper and complex front splitter.
  • But if it’s power you want, the only choice is the new Mercedes-AMG SL 65. Why? A 6.0-litre biturbo V12 producing a monster 630hp, that’s why!

  • The new SL 65 can run from 0-62mph in 4.0 seconds and, again, is either limited to 155mph or 186mph. It’s the monster pulling power that really sets the SL 65 apart though: it has an astonishing 1,000Nm of torque spread between a huge 2,000rpm rev range. It’s a force field, not a car.
  • Uniquely, the SL 65 has 20-inch wheels at the rear, wearing 285/30-section tyres. It retains the 19-inch wheels of the SL 63 at the front; clearly, transmitting all that pulling power demands plenty of rubber on the road…
  • The bespoke Mercedes-AMG interior stretches to unique performance dials in the central infotainment screen. And if it’s carbon fibre you want, the AMG is the car for you: do note, though, a lot of it pictured here is optional…

New Volkswagen Beetle First Review, India Launch

  • After recent reports that German automotive giant Volkswagen has imported the latest version of the iconic Beetle into India, the company has confirmed that they will be launching this new hatchback soon. The official date of launch has not yet been revealed.
  • Volkswagen will use the Beetle to take on stalwarts such as the Mini Cooper, the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, the Abarth 595 Competizione and the BMW 1 Series. While the details are not yet concrete, we expect the new VW Beetle to be powered by a 1.4 litre, 4 cylinder, turbocharged TSI petrol engine that delivers 158 bhp. This is the same engine that powers the Volkswagen Jetta.

  • The Bug has always been a clash of the modern and old fashioned worlds and the new one is no different. Although it is a new vehicle, its retro design elements (which is what has always made the Beetle a cool car) such as the oval headlight clusters and the alloy wheels which are a throwback to bygone eras are clearly seen.
  • The interior of the new Beetle has been reworked to make it more intuitive. Also, passengers get the option of a top notch infotainment system, a GPS navigation module, climate control and all the sort of features expected in the automobiles of today. The company has also gone to lengths to make sure that build quality is rock solid.

  • One aspect that VW will have to get spot on is the pricing. The Beetle was on sale in India in the recent past but although it was an extremely capable car, it did not perform too well due to the high asking price. It must also be noted that the new VW Beetle will be sold in India via the CBU (Completely Built Up) route. Expect prices to hover around the INR 30 lakhs mark.

Range Rover Evoque Convertible is Here......

  • JLR has unveiled the new Range Rover Evoque Convertible prior to its international debut at the Los Angeles motor show 2015. Land Rover had teased its upcoming convertible SUV with images of the prototype being tested on the company’s proving grounds and by installing full-scale wire replicas on the streets in London.
  • The Evoque Convertible was confirmed to be under development by the company during the Geneva motor show when JLR released images of the SUV testing in an under-construction metro tunnel. The SUV, weighing about 270kg more than its standard hard-top siblings, is capable of raising and powering its roof in around 20 seconds at speeds of up to 48kph.
  • The SUV additionally comes equipped with a pop-up roll-bar system that deploys if there is a danger of a rollover.
  • The interior is on par with the standard facelifted Evoque. According to Evoque program director Danella Bagnall, the Evoque Convertible, unlike other convertibles, offered “generous” space in the rear, capable of seating adults in comfort.
  • The Evoque convertible gets a reinforced monocoque chassis along with reinforced door panels to make up for the lack of a roof. Powering the new Evoque Convertible is the 2.0-litre 178bhp Ingenium diesel engine and 2.0-litre 234bhp turbo-petrol motor. The convertible SUV will only be available as a four-wheel-drive model.
  • The Evoque Convertible will go on sale internationally in 2016 and will be available in the top-level Dynamic and Dynamic HSE trims only.

KTM showcased two never seen before quarter-litre motorcycles at the Tokyo Motorcycle Show recently. The two motorcycles – 250 Duke and RC250 are equipped with a 250cc, four-stroke, liquid-cooled engine that is KTM. The engine is reported to be a sleeved down version of the very potent 373.2cc engine found on the Duke and RC390, by Japanese news website – responsejp.com.

The KTM 250 Duke shares the same chassis, design and suspension seen on the Duke motorcycles in India. The KTM RC250 also shares all components with the RC motorcycles in India apart from its 250cc engine.

If KTM does bring this motorcycle here, it will rival quarter-litre motorcycles in the sportsbike segment which currently has a diverse crop of single-cylinder and twin-cylinder motorcycles in the sportsbike segment. However this still remains questionable as the KTM 200 Duke and the RC200 sold in India are capable enough to compete in this segment that sees naked and faired motorcycles alike. KTM and Bajaj Auto may manufacture the motorcycles here and export them to foreign markets with Japan being the major importer. What remains to be unveiled are future plans from the Indo-Austrian partnership for India.

BMW developing touchscreen infotainment system

BMW is developing touchscreen infotainment systems for the near future, according to Adrian van Hooydonk, director of BMW Group design. The Bavarian carmaker currently offers infotainment systems that has a display screen, while inputs are made from a rotary controller.

“We will see some big steps in how you operate the vehicle, and voice control and head-up display is a big part of that. But, of course, using an iPad sitting on the sofa is easier than when you are on the motorway. This is a challenge that we’re working on, and there will be a role for rotary-controlled iDrive for the foreseeable future, even as we introduce touchscreen.”

Using touchscreen technology will affect the design of BMW interiors, although Hooydonk rejected the idea of a Tesla-style, flat, one-piece touchscreen dash. “A touchscreen is a big surface, and as designers we don’t like to see big, flat surfaces. However, flexible screens are around the corner, and we are pushing for that. We are dreaming of a seamless integration between display and shape.

It was not confirmed how far away curved touchscreen interiors might be, but it seems possible that they might first appear on future electric ‘i’ cars. Hooydonk referred to the i brand as a “think-tank that encourages us that big leaps are possible, and helps us to prepare for whatever might come, and we want to keep the think-tank alive.”

Triumph, now, also provides four new throttle maps that you can choose from, including road, rain, sport and off-road.

The Triumph XCx gets a 21-inch spoked wheel upfront, and a 17-inch one at rear which helps it go off the road too. The XRx, on the other hand, is a Tiger that is meant to stay on the road, and works well as a comfortable touring machine.

Mercedes-Benz has launched the updated B-class in India with prices starting at Rs 27.95 lakh for the B 180 Sport petrol version, while the B 200 CDI costs Rs 28.95 lakh.

The updated B-class gets exterior styling tweaks in the form of a new front bumper and grille, LED headlights and re-profiled tail lights. There’s also a new chrome insert on the lower bumper that mimics a twin-exhaust setup. On the inside, the steering wheel is new, and so is the instrument cluster. It also gets a new seven-inch screen for the COMAND infotainment system.

Apart from the above cosmetic updates, the major mechanical change in the B-class facelift is the updated diesel motor. The new B 200 CDI comes with a 134bhp 2.1-litre engine as opposed to the 107bhp version in the earlier car. The petrol engine, however, is the same 121bhp 1.6-litre unit.

Along with the updated B-class, Mercedes-Benz also unveiled the 2015 A-class lineup. Like the 2015 B-class, the A-class hatchback also gets the updated 134bhp diesel motor. Apart from the updated engine, the 2015 A-class gets new 16-inch alloy wheels. The 2015 A-class comes with a standard panoramic sunroof in both petrol and diesel variants.

The 2015 A-class, however, is not a facelifted car like the B-class, Mercedes is working on a subtly updated model, which is expected to debut internationally later this year and will hit our shores shortly after.

Top-spec Tata Zest diesel automatic launched

The Tata Zest was launched last year amidst a lot of expectations. It became the first diesel sedan to be launched with Automated Manual Transmission (AMT), and thereby became the most affordable diesel automatic in the country. Tata introduced the AMT on the mid-level diesel trim, and though market response was fairly okay, customers looking for the automatic Zest, had to miss out on a number of features available higher up in the range.

Tata seems to have taken market feedback into consideration, and has now introduced a new XTA trim. Like the name suggests, the XTA is the XT trim with the automatic gearbox. It is the top trim, and comes with all the features and equipment available in the XT trim. This means that customers looking for the automatic variant can now choose to have the Harman infotainment system, dual airbags, automatic climate control, rear parking sensors, height adjustable driver’s seat, rear defogger and daytime-running lights.

The Tata Zest XTA (diesel only) is priced at Rs 8.07 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Although this move comes across as an attractive offering, the Rs 8.07 lakh price tag means, you have to shell out more than Rs 70,000 over the Rs 7.31 lakh XT diesel trim; and this seems quite pricey only for the AMT gearbox addition.

Tata hasn’t officially announced the new trim, but a number of dealers have started accepting bookings for the new model. Some dealers have confirmed a waiting of 2-4 weeks for the Zest XTA.

Volkswagen Vento Magnific launched

Volkswagen has announced the launch of a special edition Vento sedan called the Vento Magnific. This special edition Vento will be offered in both Highline and Comfortline trim. Customers can opt for the Magnific edition instead of the standard car at no additional cost.

The Vento Magnific in Highline trim will offer a Blaupunkt infotainment system with front and rear display units and 3G internet connectivity, along with all the other standard features that the regular Vento Highline gets.

The Comfortline trim will sport alloy wheels, a Garmin navigation device, and Volkswagen-badged scuff-plates, apart from the standard features on the regular model.

As with the updated Vento, the special edition will also sport dual front airbags, dual beam headlamps and a flat-bottomed steering-wheel.

The car will be available at all Volkswagen dealerships from March 10.

Rolls Royce Phantom coupe ‘Al-Adiyat’ unveiled

The Phantom coupe ‘Al Adiyat’ sports a red paint scheme with white pinstrips on the exterior, with a hand-stitched red and white dual tone interior. This exterior and interior theme will continue onto the nine Wraiths included in the collection.

The car features motifs of horses and reigns throughout the vehicle and gold plated horse-shoe stamps on the door sills. The scheme of horses continues onto the seats with intricate horse logos stitched into the front headrests, while the rear headrests sport reigns.

The ‘Al-Adiyat’ coupe will feature the standard Rolls Royce 6.75-litre V12 engine generating 460bhp and a 0-100kph time of 5.8 seconds. The top speed of the car is limited to 250kph.

Mercedes-AMG GT3 will debut in Geneva

The Mercedes-AMG GT3 has been revealed prior to its debut at the Geneva motor show next week. This is the track-bred, race version of the powerful AMG GT roadcar.

Power for the AMG GT3 comes from the same 6.3-litre V8 engine as 2010’s SLS AMG GT3, which produces around 600bhp. The engine is connected to a six-speed sequential transmission. Such outputs give the GT3 a clear advantage over the standard GT road car, which gets 503bhp from its twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine in its most powerful S form.

The GT3 to be presented at the Geneva show, is in matte grey paintwork, and features a widened body, large air intakes at the front, a new diffuser and a prominent rear spoiler.

Racing modifications include a stripped-out interior and an integrated steel rollcage. Weight-saving measures include replacing the standard engine cover, doors, front wings and aprons, side skirts, diffuser and boot lid with new elements made from carbonfibre. Double wishbone suspension has also been fitted.

While the GT3 racer will compete as part of the FIA GT3 championship from next year, the racer will also inspire a more hardcore version of the GT road car. Speaking to one of the leading publication, Moers already called the go-faster GT project “a pretty good idea”. The new car will be targeted directly at the Porsche 911 GT3, although it will use neither that name, nor will it be a Black Series model. “GT3 belongs to the other company,” said Moers. “We will find another name for our car.”
